[ He smiles, already feeling more awake himself. ]

It's good to see you. You look like you should probably be sleeping, though, dude.

[ ... god. God, it's so good to hear his voice. Yu can feel himself relaxing for the first time in hours.

He smiles a little wider. A bit. ]

And go to bed without seeing your face? No way.

[ That's a smile that warms his heart. It really sinks in that he hasn't seen Yu in, what, a week? That feels like forever.

He feels his cheeks warm a bit at Yu's words, though it's hard to tell through the camera. So he tries to be cheeky about it. ]

Your background just doesn't cut it anymore, huh?

[ promptly. ]

Nope. No matter how much I stare at it, it doesn't have the same charm.

[ .... is his background actually yosuke???

I keep waking up without drool on my shirt. What a bummer. [ :( ]

[ Yu that was almost really cute. ]

Oh my god, I'm hanging up.

[ He's not hanging up. ]

[ Yu rests his chin in his palm, the look on his face fond. ]

How're things with you and Naoto?

They're chill.

[ He relaxes back against the wall despite his threat only seconds ago. ]

Been around in the subway a bit...nothing like you guys are going through, though. Have you met her dog?

[ One can imagine Yosuke and the dog get along well. They do. ]

I haven't. I've been meaning to. You'll have to give him a few extra pets for me.

[ A huff, through his nose. ]

By the way, I'm not keeping you up, am I?

Sure thing.

[ Yosuke shakes his head. ]

No way. I was hoping I'd hear from you.

[ He expects a text or maybe a call, but Facetime is new. He likes it. ]

What've you been up to today that's wiped you out so much?

[ A pause. Yu blows out a breath. ]

We had a long trek to reach where we're currently staying. You remember those wolves I told you about? We ran into them, too. Got away just fine, but it was pretty draining.

[youraffection]

Oh shit, really?

[ Yu facing off against wolves doesn't really sit well with him. But Yu is in one piece... ]

Where are you at now...?

[covenantal]

... a ski lodge. Here, look.

[ He'll switch facetime to the outward-facing camera, and Yosuke will get a very nice look at the cozy, dim interior of the ski lodge group 4 ended up in.

Yu switches the camera back. ]

Sure beats camping.

Oh, yeah.

[ That's better than he expected, actually. ]

I'm glad you're not out in the cold anymore. It's snowing all the time here, isn't it?

Yeah, pretty much. It's beautiful, but harsh, too. The auroras are incredible. I've taken a few videos, but it's hard to match seeing in person.

[ a pause. more softly ]

I miss you.

Yeah, I'll bet.

[ He'd like to see them himself, sure, but seeing Yu is more important.

Speaking of... ]

[ A pause. ]

[ a huff. ]

We're working as hard as we can to finish everything so we can come home.

[ opens his mouth, closes it. pulls in a breath. ]

I hope you don't mind that our Valentine's Day plans will be a little delayed.

I know you are.

[ He wouldn't expect anything less of Yu. Even if Yosuke wasn't in the picture--he's just a hard worker. Dedicated. Kind. ]

Yeah...I kinda figured at this point.

[ A sigh. He tries not to look disappointed, though. ]

Guess that just means more curry for me, right? Haha.

You'll save me the leftovers, won't you?

[ with a bit of a crooked smile. cheer up, buddy. ]

[ He can try and be cheeky. ]

You're going to eat our whole Valentine's dinner and not save a bite for me?

[ Lays a hand over his heart, striving to look wounded. ]

I know they say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, but it seems your heart is your stomach.

Uh, yeah. Totally. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you're alone on Valentine's Day? Drown your sorrows in food until you pass out?

[ He...meant that to be funny, but once he's done he just kind of...cringes. ]

Erm...sorry, that didn't come out the way I wanted...

[ Yu sighs, his brow creasing. ]

... actually, I hear it's tradition to drown them in ice cream. [ a beat. ] Karkat's favorite is mint.

[ ... if you want company. ]

[ Ugh, he feels so lame now. ]

...I think I'll just stick with curry...

[ He scratches his ear. ]

It reminds me of you.

[ Sigh. ]

And, I mean--I'm not gonna do that, I promise. Sorry. I'm not...trying t' make you feel guilty or anything. I was the one who told you to go, n' all.

I know you're not. [ softly. ] And you were right. This is important. But ... it still sucks, [ he offers, with a faint crooked smile. ]

Yeah.

[ Another sigh. ]

It does.

[ A lot. But they can be grown-up about this, right? Yeah. ]

...But! Uh, that's why--I've got a set up going here.

[ He'll try to lighten the mood by rotating his phone around to show the room. He's actually keeping it tidy because he's a guest at Naoto's. (Maybe surprising to most, Yosuke tries not to be an ass when it matters.) But his acoustic guitar is in one corner, his PSP charging next to it. When he finishes the show, though, Yu might notice that Yosuke's wearing a familiar shirt. ]
