[ Yosuke sets the thermos down as he lifts his spoon, only to slightly gawk at his boyfriend. ]

You're such a ham, man...

[ He takes a scoop, but not a bite of the curry just yet. ]

...But, you know, music is kind of what brought us together, isn't it?

[ Yu nods slowly, his expression fond as he takes another bite. He didn't realize how hungry he was... Once he swallows: ]

We started doing homework together, didn't we? Until homework turned into just hanging out a few days a week, and then it was almost every day...

[ A sudden laugh, somewhat sheepish. ]

The more time we spent together, the bigger my crush on you got.

[ Yosuke nods as well, downing his spoonful with a smile. He swallows before going in for another helping. ]

Honestly...? I just thought you were kinda cool. And I thought it was even cooler that you wanted to hang out with him.

[ He downs that next spoonful before speaking again. ]

I guess we just both wanted an excuses to be around each other, huh?

[ Yu laughs again. ]

Yeah. In retrospect, we were kind of obvious, weren't we? But at the time I had no idea what you were thinking. You wanted to spend time with me, and it seemed like you even enjoyed it... you didn't think I was strange or standoffish. I couldn't believe my luck that someone like you really wanted to be around someone like me.

[ Yosuke tilts his head, regarding the other boy for a quiet moment. ]

See, that still gets me..."someone like you"? "Someone like me"? I guess I've never been the kinda person anyone felt lucky to hang out with, but you and you brother were already kind of the cool new guys by default. Y'know, coming in half way through your senior year in high school, being identical twins and everything. Plus you're kind of quiet in front of most people, so it was a little mysterious. You had an "it" factor.

[ He pokes at the curry. ]

I'm just that one guy in class who won't shut up and sleeps through the first period lectures.

[ A snort with a smile. ]

But I guess it paid off because it meant I could try to bum notes off of you so you'd talk to me.

[ Yu shakes his head, quiet for a moment while he takes a bite and thinks. There's a sort of bittersweet nostalgia on his face, sad and fond at once. ]

It didn't happen very often, as I had trouble making friends in the first place, but growing up, sometimes I'd drive people away. When I was younger the other kids would call me "creepy" because I never smiled. [ A soft huff through his nose. ]

Then Souji and I moved here, and everything changed. I didn't think I could be this happy.

[ With a flickering smile. ]

[ Yu doesn't talk about what it was like before moving to Recolle very often. Yosuke doesn't ask either--not because he doesn't want to know, but because he feels sort of like he's...encroaching on something. He's not sure why. So when Yu offers bits and pieces, he eats it right up. ]

Creepy, huh?

[ He'll poke Yu's cheek with the handle end of his spoon. ]

Clearly they didn't know you very well at all. The only thing about you that's creepy is the fact that both you and your brother are way too excited about shitty halloween costumes.

[ Some of their choices were downright horrifying. ]

You're a pretty amazing guy, Yu. It's their loss.

[ Yu blinks when Yosuke pokes his face with the spoon, lifting a hand to rub at his cheek. He just sits there kinda quiet for a moment, and then smiles in that sweet, heartmelted way he gets when Yosuke surprises him. ]

I don't know if that was always true, but ... with you and everyone else behind me, I think that's something I can grow to be.

[ Yosuke grins, offering the other boy a wink. ]

Well, I think you've got a pretty good start, in that case.

I've had a lot of help, [ he demurs, but he's still smiling. ]

By the way, I have something for you.

Oh yeah? Me too!

[ He puts down the spoon into the curry, almost bouncing on the bench. ]

You wanna go first then?

[ a slow blink, and a tilt of his head. Someone's excited.

With a slight smile Yu will set down his own spoon, reaching into the other bag he brought along. Out of this he pulls a squashy, oddly shaped present. It's not soft or anything, it just feels like whatever items are in it are loose. But it's nicely wrapped, and Yu will hold it out. ]

I have two things. This is the first.

[ Of course he's excited. He spent a lot of time picking out the gift he that he got for Yu, and who doesn't like receiving things too?

But what is this? ]

Hm?

[ Yosuke will accept the package, turning it over in his hands. ]

Do I get a hint?

[ ... ]

Just a reminder that I do have another gift, [ he says, with a weird look on his face like he can't decide if he wants to laugh or not.

...I'm not sure if you think I'm badass enough that I need to wear these, which kinda lose it with the stickers, or if you think we're gonna need 'em sometime soon--

[ Ok, to be fair, that reaction makes Yu start to laugh. He lowers his face into his hand, still chuckling and smiling wryly. Once he recovers he'll turn his head so his cheek is resting on his palm instead and smile at his boyfriend. ]

It's because you're my knight in shining armor. [ grins a little more broadly. ] Karkat and Anya suggested it.

[ Yosuke is just so not sure what to think?? It's so random he feels like it has to be thoughtful in some strange way... ]

...Of course they did.

[ Well. Now it makes sense.

But Yu is so happy. So silly and happy.]

It looks more like I'm your knight in cat sticker'd armor, to be honest.

And I wouldn't have my knight any other way.

[ Yu sits up so he can press a kiss to Yosuke's cheek. ]

Here. [ He pulls out another gift, this one much smaller. He toys with it in his fingers for a moment, a quiet sign of nervousness, before holding it out. ]

This is the real gift.

[ Yosuke sighs. His...silly, but wonderful Yu.

Then, blinks. He knows Yu had said there was another gift, but now he's not sure what to expect. So he reaches out, carefully turning what appears to be a small box in his hands. ]

Is it also covered in cats?

[ Joking. Mostly.

Mostly.

But it's not covered in cats, he finds out, as he opens the box slowly and--

--is that...what he thinks it is? ]

...Yu?

[ It sure is a ring.

Yu lifts a hand to rub the back of his neck, glancing away. ]

When we met, I noticed you wore a ring. So I thought I'd ...

[ ... ]

Is it too much?

[ It's--

--It's a really awesome looking ring, is what it is. But the implications of getting a ring from one's S.O. isn't at all lost on Yosuke. He knows that Yu is a very sentimental person...and honestly, he can totally see Yu being the kind of guy who'd buy his girlfriend jewelry, and the occasional ring is or necklace is usually all that Yosuke does wear... ]

I...

[ Yosuke gulps, eyes darting back between Yu's face and the ring. ]

It's--it's really cool, dude.

[ Maybe Yu doesn't mean it that way--he can't, right? He's just--being thoughtful Yu and totally nailing Yosuke's aesthetic. ]

A ring just makes me think--

[ Don't say it!! ]

[ HE KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN THIS WAS A MISTAKE ]

No, no! No, that's not what I-- that is, I just thought it suited you. It's ... we're only teenagers, [ he murmurs with an embarrassed huff.

(The idea that Yosuke might guess at his domestic bliss daydreams is pretty mortifying.) ]

[ HE SHOULDN'T HAVE SAID ANYTHING!! He's totally overthinking it again and now he's going to make it super weird, isn't he? ]

N-No! I mean--

[ GAH! ]

--y-yeah! We're just really young and, uh--

[ Let him die now. ]

It's--it's really cool! I mean it. It's totally me! So it's--um...

[ Yosuke forces himself to look down at the ring, shutting himself up. Then, after a contemplative moment, he carefully takes it from the box and slides it on the...index finger of his right hand. You know. An ambiguous finger. ]

[ UHHHHHHHHHHHHH

wait so is the only problem with the implication of a ring the fact that they're too young as in--

would Yosuke be, like--

open to it otherwise?

Yu has to clear his throat, feeling like he wants to sink into the ground and disappear. But then Yosuke puts the ring on, and Yu can't help admiring it. Softly: ]

It looks good on you.

[ This is so embarrassing. But, at the same time, now that he's got it on, it...

It's kind of nice thinking he can have something of Yu with him wherever he goes? Gah, that's so cheesy. ]

Y-Yeah...

[ He laughs awkwardly, looking up to catch Yu's gaze and appearing suddenly a little out of breath. ]

I guess you've got good taste, huh?
